Social Work with refugees and asylum seekers

Description

In this session we will examine the contemporary realities and myths of political and social discourses in relation to refugees and asylum seekers from a global and ‘local’ perspective. Taking a whole systems approach, we will examine the different responsibilities, challenges and opportunities for agencies and social work in supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Culturally sensitive and best practice responses and culturally sensitive practice will be highlighted for social work with asylum seekers and refugees. Case studies will be drawn on to highlight and reinforce the importance of human rights-based practice with refugees and asylum seekers.

  • Examine the lived experience of refugees and asylum seekers
  • Highlight the specialised knowledge, skills and role of social workers in navigating effective support for refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Consider how to build solidarity and support with refugees and asylum seekers as social workers.

Janet Walker

Trainer Bio

Janet Walker is a Visiting Professor of International Social Work at the University of Lincoln, where she was, until 2021, the Deputy Head of School of Health and Social Care/Head of Social Work. She has experience of research and support for teaching and learning in England, with other European countries and worldwide, developing teaching and learning in social care and social work, including a European joint Erasmus Mundus Master programme in Advanced Development in Social Work. Prior to working in academia, Janet gained substantial experience in practice, as a social work practitioner and manager. Janet is currently engaged in a project to support the development of social work education in Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo; she is one of the Directors of the Council of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) and Chair of the BASW International Committee.
